I am excited that this is my 20th year volunteering as the school sponsor. This is a record in the Fort Worth Independent School District for a one-person or small company.

I brought muffins for the staff and teachers and will cater other events and help out in any way I can this year.

I enjoyed meeting the wonderful new principal (pictured here). She went out of her way by decorating the school entrance with a red carpet and each classroom door like the entrance to a movie set. Her students must have felt like celebrities.

I spoke briefly to several classes and urged the children to learn as much as they could this year and they all said they would.

It was fun saying hello to old teacher friends who have taught there for years, especially the physical education coach. We work together to help the students walk and run. I especially enjoy mentoring these kids as I am a marathon runner and exercise every day. Our first race is in October for the Cowtown Marathon’s C.A.L.F. Run which I have supported for many years. The coach was excited to share this news with me.

The school counselor asked me to speak at Career Day in October and of course I agreed. I have spoken at every one since I started this wonderful project.

The school opened its doors in 1910 and was one of the first schools in Fort Worth. It has been educating students in the historic North Side for 112 years and is an important part of the community. I have met students years later who remember me and it is rewarding to see how successful they are.

If you get hit by someone driving over the speed limit or too fast for the road conditions, you are entitled to receive compensation. This unfortunately happens far too often. Speeding in Texas has become the biggest safety issue on our state’s roads.

According to the National Safety Council, about 30% of fatal crashes involve drivers who go too fast. The NSC also reported that speed-related deaths have recently increased. This is a tragic situation that affects everyone. Thousands of Texans have died because of an easily avoidable practice.

Driving too quickly increases the risk of crashes, injuries, and deaths in a number of ways. They are caused by

 Increased stopping distance: It takes over the length of a football field for the average car traveling at 30 mph to stop completely, compared to just only about 65 yards for the average car traveling at 20 mph.

 Less time for reaction: The faster a car is traveling, the less time a driver has to respond appropriately when they become aware of a hazard.

 Loss of control: Drivers are much more likely to lose control of their cars and trucks when they are driving too fast, even in good weather.

 Increased impact: A car traveling at 30 mph is twice as likely to kill a pedestrian it hits as the same car traveling at 20 mph.

Speeding in Texas is more than just driving at an arbitrary limit. Going 30 mph can be too fast in some situations like on a residential street. While the Texas Transportation Code in Section 545.351 sets out the law, every crash is different.

State Police Are Cracking Down

This is why the Texas Department of Transport launched the Be Safe, Drive Smart campaign. TxDOT started this program to address the issue of avoidable road deaths across the Lone Star State.

The effort will see an increase in the number of law enforcement officers dealing with traffic offenses on Texas roadways from July 14 to July 30. There will be an increased number of citations as law enforcement officials hope to make our roads and highways safer. We hope this raises awareness of this important issue.

It is sad that Texas has not had a day without a road death in the past 22 years – and impossible to think we will ever have one.

Other Risky Behaviors That Cause Accidents on DFW Roads

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigated the crashes and released a report.  It primarily blamed the company that built and monitored the tollway.

The report revealed important details about how the collisions occurred including that

• The North Tarrant Express (NTE) Mobility Partners, the consortium of companies that planned, built, and maintains the express lanes on the interstate where the crashes happened, claimed that the road had been pretreated with a salt or brine solution two days before the crashes.
• However, very little training was given to NTE employees and the agency was short-staffed.
• NTE only had three maintenance vehicles but afterward, added six vehicles and 18 weather sensors.
• The express lanes were designed with virtually no shoulder space and very few exits so oncoming vehicles had nowhere to go when dangerouis conditions happened.
• At 3:00 a.m. that morning, police responded to a vehicle crash nearby on I-35. An officer reported this information to NTE. But only parts of the highway were spot treated.
• NTE activated warning signs by 3:40 a.m. so it understood the dangerous road situation.
• Just before the crashes happened at 6:00 a.m., the average speed in the left lane was 82 MPH. Drivers were going as fast as 103 MPH. The speed limit is 75.
• First responders said they slipped and fell when they got out of their vehicles and did not see any sand on the highway.

The NTSB report recommended more training for the toll facilities, new laws to regulate speed limit signs, and more sensors to monitor roads on cold weather days.
