I was angry to read recently that a 44 year old man was killed by a 16 year old girl driving her mom's SUV and texting. The girl finally turned herself in to authorities almost two months later, only after learning that there was a warrant out for her arrest for negligent homicide with a motor vehicle.

I run on our streets and am always worried that I or a friend will get hit just like this.

Field Day Fun At My Adopted School

I just got back to the office from Field Day at Rufino Mendoza Elementary School. I have been a proud supporter of the school since I chose it in the Adopt A School Program eight years ago, one way I try to help better our already wonderful city.

I have mentored children, spoken at Career Days, purchased books, food, and clothes, cheered on the after-school running team, and led them in stretches. I encourage the kids to go to college and try to inspire them.

My 25th Boston Marathon Qualifier

I am delighted to have just run my 25th straight Boston Marathon Qualifying (BQ) time in 25 states in the last 3 years at the Kentucky Derby Marathon.

I'm proud that I've placed in the top runners in my age group in 13 of the last 16 of these races. And that I've finished in the top 10% of the entire race in most of them, since I'm one of the oldest runners and only run about 30 miles a week (serious marathoners typically run 60 - 100 miles and only two races a year).

My 34 marathons in 32 states have been a magical mystery trip. They have taken me by Revolutionary War sites in Boston (twice), Philadelphia, Newport, and Burlington, Civil War battlegrounds, and the high school that sparked the civil rights movement. Breaking news: Longtime KXAS-TV anchorwoman Jane McGarry was arrested on the Dallas North Tollway in her 2007 Porsche early Sunday morning.

The DPS officer found that she had bloodshot, droopy eyes, swayed, and failed several sobriety tests including the walk-and-turn and the one-leg stand. Ms. McGarry admitted to drinking three glasses of wine. She refused a breathalyzer test.

Fort Worth Death Caused By Improperly Maintained Truck

A young girl, 3 year old, Zinia Guy, of Fort Worth, was tragically killed in a Monday morning crash on Interstate 20 near the Hemphill exit. An oil truck had lost its drive shaft (how does this happen?) and it was stopped in the road. The girl's mother crashed into the back of the truck and is hospitalized in critical condition. My thoughts and prayers go out to her and the family.

Last year I represented a woman who was hurt in a crash nearby on I-35 at Seminary when a garbage truck also lost its drive shaft (see photo). I sued the company, subpoened the vehicle's maintenance records, and proved that the company was not only negligent for its poor maintenance of the truck but for its hiring and supervision of the driver. I forced the company to pay a huge settlement.
