According to investigators, a 12-year-old and a 13-year-old were crossing the property at about 7:10 p.m. when the homeowner’s wife came outside and told them to leave. The 13-year-old reportedly responded with profanity, and she went back inside to tell her husband what had happened.

The authorities said the homeowner then came outside and confronted the boys. The older teen reportedly began recording the encounter on his cellphone because he allegedly felt threatened. Investigators said the man first pushed the teen near the collarbone before allegedly grabbing him by the neck and squeezing.

The incident happened on the evening of June 25 after the alleged victim stopped at a gas station while driving home. Investigators said he stepped out of his Mini Cooper when a woman suddenly approached and allegedly ordered him back into the vehicle. She reportedly claimed she was his designated driver and told him he was under the influence before driving away.

The alleged victim, who has autism, appeared confused and frightened during the encounter. Dash camera video later reviewed by a local news station reportedly captured him asking the woman who she was and saying he was afraid of strangers. During the drive, she allegedly told him she planned to show him around the city and take him to an older part of town.

According to prosecutors, the man received two consecutive life sentences for two counts of willful, deliberate, and premeditated attempted murder. He also received an additional five years for personally causing great bodily injury and using a weapon during the attack.

The investigation found that the man had reportedly become obsessed with the victim after knowing her through online gaming. Authorities said he traveled from Canada to California after allegedly planning the attack for about a month. Prosecutors said he later admitted his intention had been to kill someone.
