Sgt. Steve Licon, 53, a veteran of the California Highway Patrol was killed in a car crash involving a suspected drunk driver. According to a KTLA news report, officials said Licon was conducting a traffic stop on the 15 Freeway in Lake Elsinore just north of Nichols Road the afternoon of April 6 when he was fatally struck. Officials said 36-year-old Michael Callahan of Winchester was driving under the influence when his Toyota Corolla hit Licon, his patrol motorcycle and the Chrysler sedan that that sergeant had pulled over. A boy was killed and 10 others were injured in a multi-vehicle car accident in Fountain Valley, which officials say, involved a suspected DUI driver. According to a KTLA news report, the crash that occurred the night of March 30 near Euclid Street involved five vehicles. California Highway Patrol officials said the suspect’s pickup truck plowed into the back of a minivan, which had been disabled on the northbound HOV lane on the 405 Freeway near Euclid Street. The truck, a black 2014 Toyota Tacoma, was traveling north at an unknown speed when the driver failed to stop in time. It is not clear why the minivan was stalled. Continue reading →

A man was killed in a Huntington Beach bicycle accident after a driver crashed into him at a street intersection, officials said. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the incident occurred early morning on March 30 at the intersection of Beach Boulevard and Adams Avenue. Police who responded to the scene found a bicyclist, about 30 to 40 years old, in the roadway with significant trauma to his head and body. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Continue reading →

The family of 68-year-old Maria “Carmen” Chavarria of La Mirada is asking for the public’s help to find the driver of the vehicle that struck and killed her the afternoon of Feb. 20 as she was walking home with her two grandchildren. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the driver, who witnesses say, was using a cell phone, struck the three pedestrians and fled the scene. Edward Lustro, 34, a paramedic with American Medical Response, was killed in a motorcycle accident in Palm Springs after officials say a driver made an illegal U-turn. According to a KTLA news report, Lustro had just completed a 12-hour shift when the crash occurred on the Gene Autry Trail north of Seven Lakes Drive the morning of March 18. Yasar Barakzai, 22, of Irvine was killed in a motorcycle accident after colliding with a Lyft vehicle in Costa Mesa near Orange Coast College the night of March 19. According to a report in the Daily Pilot, the fatal crash occurred near the intersection of Fairview Road and El Camino Drive. A male pedestrian was fatally injured after he was struck by a motorist who officials say may have been under the influence of drugs. According to a KTLA news report, the fatal pedestrian accident occurred the morning of March 16 at the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Maricopa Street. Police say a 2018 Nissan Sentra traveling south on Crenshaw Boulevard through Maricopa Street on a green light collided with the pedestrian who was walking westbound outside the crosswalk. A missing $3 part may have caused the tires roll off a tractor-trailer, killing a Tulane University student from Minnesota. According to an Associated Press, one of two 3-inch washers designed to keep truck wheels tightly secured was missing from the trailer. Two wheels joined together rolled into a rest stop killing Margaret Maurer, 21, of Forest Lake. Maurer and her Tulane classmates were reportedly heading from the Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans to a cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. Continue reading →

Two people have been killed in separate pedestrian accidents on Beach Boulevard in Huntington Beach on March 9 and early morning March 10. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the first incident occurred around 10:45 p.m. at Beach Boulevard and Slater Avenue. Police said a woman believed to be between 50 and 60 years old was crossing the roadway when she was struck by a silver 2014 Nissan Versa. Officials in La Mirada are looking for a hit-and-run suspect after they say a Toyota Camry struck and killed a woman and injured her two grandchildren who were walking home from school the afternoon of Feb. 20. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the woman, who was identified as the children’s grandmother, died in a local hospital several hours after the incident.
