Lodi School Gun Scare

Gun Scare at Lodi School

If you were to get a phone call that your child’s school had been canceled for the day because there were reports of a person with a gun in close proximity to school grounds, how would you react? On Monday in Lodi, it was a scary situation that many parents and guardians found themselves in.

What Happened?

Monday classes were canceled at Needham Elementary School in Lodi due to a woman who had barricaded herself into her travel trailer that was parked in front of the school. It was reported she was apparently waving a gun around. Lodi Police Department indicated that classes had to cancel due to the safety of the children.

Team Efforts by Lodi Unified School District and Lodi Police Department

Lodi Police Department quickly blocked off the area of South Pleasant Avenue and Chestnut Street. Lodi Unified School district put a call out to parents informing them to keep their children at home and do not allow them to leave for school.

Alleged Suicidal Woman With Hand-Gun

The tense situation began with a disturbance call around 6:30 a.m. Police arrived on scene to a woman with a hand-gun who was making suicidal comments, officers at the scene did not know if the woman had any children barricaded in the trailer with her. A SWAT team soon arrived and surrounded the trailer because the woman who was responding to police communication earlier in the morning had stopped talking to officers.

Woman Exited the Trailer Unharmed

At around 9:15 a.m the woman resumed her conversations with law enforcement. She was convinced to exit the trailer around 9:20 a.m. She came out unharmed. No shots were fired during the tense incident and all children were kept safe.

Guns & School Safety

It seems like these days there are more and more stories popping up in the news about guns being brought to school. Have you ever talked to your children about guns being bought at school? It’s a very scary thing to think of as a parent. Schools do a great job of having safety protocols in place. Talk to your child’s teacher about such protocols and ask them if they feel confident in their ability to execute them should the situations arise. It is important to discuss the dangers of handguns with our children.
