Elk Grove Bicycling Accidents

In 2009, a traffic study was performed by the Office of Traffic Safety.  In that study we learned that Elk Grove was the city in Sacramento County with the most bike-on-car crashes.

The intersection of Laguna Boulevard and Bruceville Road reported a total of four bike-on-car accidents that year.  That is more than any other intersection in the county.  This same intersection ranked number five in total automobile crashes in the county.  When presented with statistics like this, it’s easy to conclude that Laguna Boulevard and Bruceville Road may be a problematic intersection and one that should be avoided whenever possible.  If there is a safer route available, why not find it and use it?

How Do I Learn About Bicycle Safety in Elk Grove

On the City of Elk Grove’s website you will find the Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Trails Master Plan (BPTMP).  The BPTMP was adopted by the City Council in 2014.  We would like to think this plan is in response to the depressing statistics above.  But, we don’t know for sure.  We do know that it was created to help encourage Elk Grove residents to walk, bike and use trails in and around Elk Grove.  Whether you are biking to school, work or running errands we think it just makes good sense.  It is an alternate form of transportation that saves gas, does not pollute the environment and is great for our physical health.

The BPTMP focuses on making modes of non-vehicular transportation throughout the city safer, more convenient and enjoyable.  It provides ways to connect throughout Elk Grove and even into the Sacramento region.  Elk Grove residents want to have the most efficient, safest and enjoyable bicycle, pedestrian and trail facilities in the county (not the worst).   We believe this is one way to achieve that goal.

Bicycle Commuting from Elk Grove to Sacramento?

I have seen many men in suit and tie atop their bicycle (helmet on and brief case in tow) traveling through my neighborhood.  I have often wondered where they work and how far they have to travel.  I googled “commuting to work by bike from Elk Grove to Sacramento.”  This is what I found.  It’s a YouTube video of a bicycle commuter traveling along Franklin Boulevard in Elk Grove to Memorial Auditorium on “I” Street in Sacramento.  I don’t know about you, but I’m not ready for this mode of travel to work.  It looks too dangerous!  Especially since we know the dangers of distracted drivers (aka texting while driving — an egregious, yet well known fact).
